PRESS ADVISORY: True Compassion Advocates protest implementation of assisted suicide
Who?
True Compassion Advocates, the grass-roots successor to The Coalition Against Assisted Suicide (CAAS), will be sponsoring two supportive care demonstrations advocating for improved end of life care and protesting the legalization of physician-assisted suicide in Washington State.
When & Where?
- Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Washington State Department of Health between 12 noon and 1pm on the sidewalk in front of DOH at 101 Israel Road SE in Tumwater.
- Thursday, March 5, 2009-the day the assisted suicide law officially goes into effect - at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, between 12 noon and 1 pm, on the sidewalk near the front of the hospital at 1959 N.E. Pacific Street.
Why?
Those advocating improved end of life care instead of assisted suicide will gather at the Department of Health to protest the failure of the state to adopt rules and regulations that will prevent coercion and abuse. At the University of Washington, compassion advocates will protest the hospital's decision to prescribe and dispense intentionally lethal drug overdoses to vulnerable patients.
"Beginning this week, True Compassion Advocates across the state will be raising awareness about the dangers of assisted suicide and plight of vulnerable patients by demonstrating in front of select hospitals and nursing homes," said Eileen Geller, a hospice nurse and director the new group.
"Our mission is to enhance support for people who are at-risk for assisted suicide. Through education, social policy, and community action, we advocate for true compassion, promote authentic dignity, and advance life-affirming choices," Geller stated in conclusion.
